Extempore

Werner Zangerle: tenor saxophone
Villy Paraskevopoulos: piano
Vinicius Cajado: double bass
Mark Holub: drums

Extempore was founded in 2021 at the initiative of pianist Villy Paraskevopoulos for the V:NM Festival in Graz. The debut took place as a trio, following the sudden and tragic passing of bassist Thomas Stempkowski shortly before the concert. Subsequent performances featured various guest bassists, until Vinicius Cajado joined, bringing a musical voice that integrates seamlessly while expanding the ensemble’s artistic direction.

The quartet operates at the intersection of European improvised music and American free jazz, though the band treats these categories as rough simplifications rather than fixed boundaries. What connects them is a shared approach: listening, communicating, creating new layers together. Some pieces are dreamlike, others wild and loud. The emphasis is on free improvisation and the collective shaping of dynamic arcs. Their debut album Dream of Frequencies was released in 2025 on Klanggalerie.
